I use to love the premixed formula & used it all the time... until there was a recall - unbeknowst to me or anyone else. No news reports or anything. I noticed the premixed formula was just a slight bit darker brown than usual. My daughter was fussy for nearly two weeks - we bought several of one batch. After calling the company I heard a recording that the premixed bottles were being recalled due to the bottles being so thin that air got in. That was the last of the premixed formula. Come to find out it happened to a friend of mine too, a long time prior to this mishap. So for probably 3 months now I have used powdered formula only. Yes its a pain, is messy and takes longer but I know that it's safe. I just fill all my bottles up ahead of time with the formula then when I need a bottle, I just add water. It works out good because I no longer need to worry about refridgerating them before usage. Plus now that my daughter has teeth, I use nursery water with flouride so I know her teeth are healthy too.

Really the only difference between the two is price and convenience. The premixed is great because it is easier, but the powder is a lot less expensive. As for the person who claimed that the powdered formula is too thin, she might not have been using enough powder. It's very important to follow the instructions on the can. After mixing the first few bottles, it really does become second nature and you can save a lot of money in the long run.

Yes, it is just premixed with water and is the same nutritionally, caloric, etc as when you mix it yourself. However, I have found that the premixed formula smells worse and also stains clothing worse. For some reason I don't have problems with the powder that I mix at home staining if it gets on the baby's clothes, however it is totally different with the premixed stuff. It stains and usually does not come out.

With my first three children I used the premixed only when traveling as it was easier and you didn't have to mess with measuring, etc. But with my latest child I found a great way to use the powder and make it when I need it. I premeasure the powder and have it in a little plastic bottle (not a baby bottle, just a plastic container with a small lid that is easy to poor into a baby bottle) and I just put the water in the bottle. Then when I need the formula I just add the premeasured powder to the bottle and shake. This way the bottles are always fresh.

When I get home I just refill the plastic tupperware holder (I don't wash it as it is not dirty) and throw it back in the diaper bag (I usually have 3 to 4 of these in the diaper bag in case I don't bring enough bottles to grandma's, the babysitters, etc., and they need to make another bottle).

Also, the powder is cheaper than the premixed. I don't know about you but I am always trying to cut corners when possible. Babies and baby accessories, food, etc. are hard to come by.

I use the powder variety, the premixed seems to be more concentrated than the powder kind. Also the powder formula last longer and you don't have to use it so quickly. Most premix has to be used w/in 72 hrs of opening and sometimes that isn't always possible and you end up wasting formula.
I think that it is a little easier to travel with the powder because I just put the acorrect amount of scoops in the bottle and then when I am out with my son and he is hungry I can just add the water and its fresh and doesn't need to be warmed and he is good to go

Theres no difference whatsoever. The premixed is mixed with water, nutritional value = exactly the same. Price of premixed is much higher. This is the best thing to do: when you go somewhere fill a couple bottles up with the right amount of water and buy one of those little plastic compartment containers in the baby isle at walmart. Then fill it up with the correct amount of powder, then just mix it in the bottle of water and youre done. You dont need to worry about keeping it cold, or warming it up
because room temp is the best temp for formula.

another thing: premixed is really nice to have for a 3 am feeding though.

Some premixed formula still need water added. It is more expensive. I liked powder because it was easier to fill bottles with water and add powder when he needed a bottle then worry about keeping premixed stuff cold and keeping track of how long it's been sitting out.

premixed is really nice because you can just heat and pour powder is good too because you can just put warm water in the bottle and shake the powder up in it but if you go places and you don't want to use the water (such as a mall bathroom etc.) thats a disadvantage , also with premixed you don't have to worry about clumps of formula in the bottle which happens 90% of the time unless you pour the formula into a mixing bowl and get the clumps out its really personal preference! they both have advantages and disadvantages at night, i like to use powder because im half asleep anyways so i just get water out of the tap and mix the formula but during the day i like to use the premixed.

While there is not nutritional difference between the two types of formula, there are some subtle differences to you and your child. Premixed formula is more expensive, but produces less gas in your baby. Powdered formula is very convient, usually less expensive and there is less waste due to mixing only what you need. If your chld has nutritional need for more calories, powdered formula can be added to breastmilk or used to make a higher caloric content formula. What type is best for your baby can only be determined by careful trial and error. My children tolerated both, but definately had more gas with the powdered formula. Good luck with finding what is right for your child.

Well I am not harping on you at all but I am TRYING to breastfeed, however I also use the powder formula for backup... I also have the premixed formula and both are pretty convenient. If you are going to use the powdered formula I suggest boiling a pot of water and measuring about 16 ozs. You then mix the powdered formula with the boiling water (it is boiled to sanitize) and premeasure and pour your bottles- this way you have them right when you need them- and they last for 48 hours in the refrigerator.
Good luck!

Yes it is just already mixed. When my daughter was born I used the premixed from the hospital and bought a few after that. Then I switched to the powder and did it myself. It was cheaper and I really couldnt find the premixed in the brand I had to switch her too. It really isnt too hard to mix it yourself you get use to it really quick and it becomes second nature.
