Adelie penguins breed around the coastline of Antarctica and on some of the islands, with one or two small breeding colonies lying just north of the Antarctic circle. They opt for sheltered areas which are ice-free where possible. Unlike emperors, Adelies breed during the Antarctic summer.

Outside the breeding season they tend to move north during the winter to regions of pack ice, but sometimes have been spotted as far North as New Zeland, Tasmania and the Falkland Islands.

Adelies and emperors are the only species that breed exclusively on or close to the Antarctic mainland. Gentoos also breed on the mainland but are mainly found on more northerly islands. I think there are some chinstraps and possibly kings on the peninsula.

The chinstraps do not breed exclusively on or close to the Antarctic continent. They are also found on many sub-Antarctic islands including South Georgia and Heard.
