Any group can hold the office of the president. The only obstacle is to get enough votes supporting your party. Most of the nation follows partisan rules, so rather than listen to the candidate, they immediately associate themselves with democrat and republican. A candidate's party is only an indication of their values if they were to be elected (Green party...interested in the world values/environment mainly)
An electoral college is intended to represent the state from which they came from. So they are necessarily associated with a party, but they vote based on how the state tells their representative how to vote. If a state is independant and a majority of their districts vote independent, then the electoral college candidate must follow what their state says. But there is way too much people associating themselves with dem or rep that their electoral college is often associated with those parties.

Technically, yes an Independent could be President, but with the way the system is run these days it is almost impossible for anyone outside of the standard 2-party system to get anywhere near that kind of vote tally.

If an independent won enough states; with enough electoral votes, then the 'college' is honor bound to vote for the winner of that state.

Of course, so can a Green party.
It just takes enough votes.
GOP and Democrats are recently new parties. Go look up what Abe Lincoln ran as, or Jefferson, Madison, etc...
