what you are doing is using the difference in solubility between the 2 compounds. 1 is totally soluble the other partially. if you flood the system with solvent you will lose the product you want. that's why you use as little solvent as necessary

Then you would have more solvent to cook off before it reached saturation and crystallization started.

Then the solute would not precipitate out of the solution and would remain dissolved.
