My computer isn't reading the camera I plug into it?

I plug my digital camera into my computer and nothing happens. I go into "my computer" to see if it shows up there, and it is not there either. What am I doing wrong?

Try a different USB port

Well if it is WindowsXP than it should read it, but if not did it come with a CD? If not try going to the company who built the camera (e.g. Kodak, Canon, etc.) and see if they have a 'driver' for the camera...
