To check to make sure you and the baby are both OK. Don't think that just because you have made it this far that nothing can go wrong. Never assume that everything is going well.

They monitor the pregnancy, check mom's blood pressure, check for swelling, etc.
Pre-eclampsia is very common towards the end of pregnancy and they want to keep a close watch on mom and baby.
Also after 36 wks most doctors usually do an internal exam to see if you've dilated. Some woman dilate and don't even know.
I think towards the end of pregnancy is when the appts are the most important to keep so that if there is an issue they know right away.

Well, according to my OB, the weekly visits during the last month of pregnancy are not only to check your weight, blood pressure, urine, etc..., but also to check your cervix. When your OB checks your cervix, it also helps prepare your cervix for upcoming delivery. I think it has something to do with helping to release some hormones that allow the cervix to start opening to prepare for the upcoming delivery.
I know it's a pain having to go to the doctor every week, but it's in the best interest of you and your baby. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I went a full 40 weeks and because I had gestational diabetes, I had to go to the OB twice a week for non-stress tests. That was in addition to the prenatal visits and ultrasounds. I did this all while working full-time up until the day before I delivered.
Hang in there and best wishes for a healthy delivery and baby!

Well as you get closer to labor they need to actually check you more. Everytime I go in I have to get my cervix and all that checked cuzI'm already -2 station and 50% effaced they also think I may have lost part of my plug. So he's watching it closely so to tell when I might go into labor. Also they have to check your pee for protein to make sure you aren't developing pre-ecplampsia which can easily develope in the last trimester. Also for your blood pressure if i goes up too much you'll have to be induced. Theres just alot more to worry about in the end for the dr. Like if the baby is turned correctly all sorts of stuff. Besides don't you like going in and knowing whats happening with your body? I do! I love knowing I am getting closer and closer to relief of being pregnant. But then begins the battle of motherhood.

They check to see how effaced your cervix is, and to see if you are dilating properly. It will help give a better estimate of when the baby will come!
Don't skip the appointments - it's important stuff to know!

Mostly to check your blood pressure. It is better to catch pre eclampsia early. Your blood pressure can start sneaking up without you knowing and you can go downhill fast.

They check to see if you are dialating and just making sure all is going well and the baby is positioning right.

To make sure you haven't started labor without knowing it. (It can happen)! To try and find out what position the baby is in, if he/she seems to be appropriate size. That there is still a heartbeat. I've been pregnant.. That's what I was told my doc was doing!

They check to make sure everything continues to go well, they see if you are dialted any, and if your cevix is starting to thin. I thought they were useless too, until my last one. she told me to be careful as I was getting close. I went into labor that night, a week before my due date.
