Human civilization rose upon storytelling. We told stories of our ancestors and learned better about how to survive from those stories. Storytellers came to be in our clans, and they became the first teachers other than our parents. Storytelling became an art and grew into theater. All civilizations have theater of some kind. Greek comedy and tragedy, for example, became a way for people to explore issues and feelings. When television began (I was there), people were greatly mesmorized by that glowing magical box with its stories and comedy, and it's commercials that showed us what there was out there to buy. It was addictive, though, and consumed many hours of our days. It was a passive activity that took time away from active thinking activities and exploration of the real world. It was a vicarious experience that abstracted the big world out there that we thought we were getting a peek at. Those abstractions were not the truth. As I traveled around the world, I saw that the news was slanted every which way. Political and religious agendas were corrupting the content on the news and controlled the content of the stories with censorship and slant. People in schools grew less eager to learn actively. They behaved groggy and slower. I saw that when television came to my community. There was a healthy sparkle in our eyes, a passion that we once had, that never was again. The parents who grew up without telelvision were the last people to raise a generation with high math and science scores, peaking in 1973. After that, math and science scores, indicating our ability to think for ourselves and to control our own destinies, plummeted steadily ever since. People stopped reading stories and stopped going outside of their homes to tell stories in person to each other. Children stopped playing outdoors in natural settings, dividing them from nature's objective truths. I raised my own children without television and they, and other children without television exposure, grew up with the highest academic scores in the land.Three generations have been watching commercialized/politicalized television now and our world is a mess for it. Commercials fueled out-of-control consumerism and a gluttony in this land that consumes up to eight times as much per person than other peoples of the world. We raped the earth for more and more raw materials to feed the gluttony and built monster-size quarries and equipment to dig out even more, polluting the air and water in the process. People grew lethargic and fat. Sixty percent of the people in this land are now obese, not just fat, but obese, costing us billions of dollars in healthcare and grave loss of vitiality. As with all things, moderation is television viewing, for the quality entertainment and stories and information is legitimate. But, we watch too much television, which is dangerous for our health and dangerous for a democracy because it shuts down our souls and ability to think clearly for oursleves and keeps us in a false dream, just like a narcotic.

I can tell you why I watch TV
Some programs make me laugh
Others make me feel excited
Some make me think about things
And of course some programs are very informative, they teach you things that you didn't know. These are all good reasons for watching TV. Although now we are in the age of Internet I am watching more and more stuff on-line and gradually using the TV less. Eventually I believe that TVs will become obsolete and will be totally replaced by the Internet.

TV is the opiate of the masses. A cheap fix. Most tv shows are just totally stupid & unwatchable. There are quality programs, just not very many. People watch it because life IS tough and it gives them an escape. However if they would just go without tv for a while they would find there are better things to do with their time.

Sounds like crap, b/c I watch about 45 min. of TV a day, and I don't think of that crap, I think of reality not what I can't have, or desire, b/c I know its almost like a fictional fantasy world, I just keep that in my head, and so far I have not been brainwashed into keeping up with the jones's just b/c I see someone with money spending it don't mean I have money and spend what I don't have, and lastly tv is freaking entertainment it is not supposed to be a brainwashing boob tube device. You probably just take crap like that too seriously and you get worked up about other people...who knows who cares

Because other TV (news) is interesting and informative. Because other TV (comedy shows) are funny and help you forget your stressful day at work.
Because other TV (drama shows) are something to obsess about; talk to your coworkers about; scream over the hot guy about.
Because other TV just gets your mind off that real boring life you have and makes you immerse yourself into that fake, pretty, fun world. Oh and because humans get BORED.

The same reason they read books, magazines, newpapers and websites. The same reason they listen to music and the radio. The same reason they go to parties and meetings.
