Go to Dell.com I got mine for home for $399. It works great. They have several options and they have specials all the time so you can pick the computer that meets your needs and your budget. My printer that I bought is a printer, phot printer, copier, scanner all in one. I love it. My monitor is a flat screen. You can get a laptop for as little as 699 I think. Pretty good deal. We now buy our office computers from Dell.

www.APPLE.COM
Your son will have less problems with an apple than he would a PC. They do run the Microsoft office that he will need more than likely. He can also get a student discount and they offer mail in service with FAST turn around.
We have had Apple (macs) for 5+ yrs and we are not dealing with virus's. They are easier to use and don't require as much technical expertise to use.
We have turned all of our friends on Mac Apple products because my husband won't mess with the window running PC"S.
Good luck to you. You may pay a little more up front but they are good longer.

I would try best buy or some place like that. First you need to figure out what he is going to be using it for. If it's just web and word processing for school, you can get away with getting a cheap $200-500 computer. If he is going to be doing a lot of games, video editing, photos, etc.. you may want to get a more up to date computer. I know best buy is NOT on comission, so they can give you good advice with no pressure.
