if i were to wear a thong, it would probably be near my groin area, on my buttocks, instead of on the beach,
How would I wear something on something that is not part of my body?
But more seriously, the beach clothes/swimwear that is so caught up in popular fashion and questions of morality is really a workaround as to how much freedom of motion, essential to safety in the water, can be gained with respect to issues of social censure of certain bodily parts most commonly kept hidden because of the sexual connotations.
Add in a third question, these three areas are the most sensitive areas of skin, and should be THE most protected from exposure to the sun. And since the water in which you swim is literally teeming with very small life forms, which you wouldn't want accidentally going into some very sensitive body cavities and making a home there.
At this point think of the safety of your ears as well. but a thong wouldn't cover that.
The nose and mouth and eyes, and even the ears to some extent, have natural defenses to such invasions; sneezing, coughing, blowing the nose, (ears too) tears and blinking.
Not so the rectum, vagina or urethra.
Think of that movie with Sean Connery, where he is a scientist working in the Amazon looking for medicinal plants.
There is a scene where he instructs the New Kid on The Rain Forest about a safety issue with bathing. And a certain parasite.
So, yes, I would wear at least a thong. How much more depends on how likely it will be to offend or mollify the local expressions of what is moral and what is not.
Also while you are not actually in the water, more cloth is a lot healthier because Mr Sun is not your friend.
