if you have the use of a ethernet cable lets use this one....first go to the "my computer "icon on the desktop and right click your mouse and press properties then when system properties appears press the hardware tab and then device manager
go down the list and look for network adapters, when you find this expand this by clicking the + sign next to it and the name of any network(ethernet) adapters will appear, when you see this right click the adapter you wish to use and then click properties, you will then see a window,in which it will give a device status,if it says"this device is working properly" then you should be fine and go on to the next stage(look below),however if it says anything else, you need to click the driver tab and then re-install driver, this is when you need to find the website of the company who made your network(ethernet) card, however try enabling it by using the drop down box at the bottom
there is a quick way round this, buy a new network card for around £5 from misco(http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~39641~WW~/D-Link%2010%2F100%20Ethernet%20PCI%20Card.htm),all you need is to insert this into a spare pci slot(thats the white slots, around 3 of them at the bottom of your motherboard) and windows should recognize it and install the drivers needed
the ethernet socket is normally located next to 2 u.s.b sockets so make sure you are connecting the correct cable(ethernet cables are either white or yellow) and insert it into the ethernet socket,it will click into place when inserted correctly
as soon as the ethernet socket recognizes a internet connection it will place a icon in the network connections folder in control panel explaining the type of connection and also the firewall status ect
also some ethernet cables can be faulty, this has happened to me,buying a new cable is very inexpensive, you should find them called either lan cables, ethernet cables,rj-45 network cables.you should be able to buy them for around £3 for a 3m length
my advice is buy a new cable first and if that dosent work then buy a new network card
i hope this helps
good luck

I had the same problem with my laptop. It eventually turned out that I had an unlicensed version of Windows XP, and the modem wouldn't recognise the computers IP address. I got round it in the end by using a "realtek" ethernet card, which only cost a few pounds, but you'll have to check that your mum's computer has a slot for one first. Good luck, and ignore people who send snide answers. They haven't the intelligence to do anything else!

those modems only work with the ethernet cable. If you connect the cable and go into your network connects and you LAN is marked as disconnected then you have a defective peice of equipment (either cable , the modem, or your plug). Replace those peices. If still nothing check to make sure connection is enables and that the card is installed.

Hi,I will take for granted, every thing as per instructions were followed, either by disc or illustrations. If all is OK,you will have to call your provider and they will direct you on resetting your Ethernet modem. There is a TINY RESET BUTTON on it.They will guide you through it step by step. Good Luck ROSCO

What you need to do is have your mother check to make sure everything is plugged in according to your ISPs instructions. If that doesn't work the SHE needs to contact her ISP to diagnose and correct the problem.
