On some days, it's important to me to know my mail (snailmail not email) is here as soon as it is. Has anyone heard of a device that would notifiy me when the lid of my mailbox has been opened? etc. ? (a light and a sound would be great - just in my room, not to alert the whole neighborhood) i'm thinking of something or somethings that I could buy say at a Radio Shack

There are remote wireless driveway alarms. Cost??? - but I'll bet one could be adapted. Cheaper might be the safety device (electric eye) installed to prevent powered garage doors from closing when something is in the way. (That would require wires and 120V. elec.)
Can you see the mailbox? I had a fairly large (2" dia.) eyebolt sticking out of the mailbox door so the circle was horizontal when the door was closed. A brightly colored cone sat in the ring. The cone was attached to the stem of the eyebolt by a light cord. When the door was opened the cone fell out and dangled from the cord. It worked really well - after I "trained" the mailman NOT to return the cone to its holder!
