Ok, for the time being, exclude rent or a place to stay.
Are you an American? How much do you spend, in dollars, to eat, see movies, see the sights, take buses, go out, buy groceries, each month in the USA? Figure out that number in dollars, and then switch the $ to the £ (don't convert the number, just the symbol). Ok, done that? That's about right. You can now convert the £ figure to $s using a conversion chart to see how much you need.
Basically, things in London (a soda, a loaf of bread, a newspaper, McDonalds, a movie, a taxi) cost the same number of units, it's just that in London they are £s and here they are $s. In case you don't know, it takes almost 2$ to get 1£, so a £5 meal at McDonalds in London is actually a $10 meal. Ouch!
As for rent / hostel, you'll probably have a better idea by looking at some websites. If you are renting, please note most UK prices are quoted "per week" not "per month".

London is a very expensive place to live. Even if you find budget accommodation, everyday expenses are quite high.
Be prepared!
