Assuming painted, not stained. DAP acrylic PAINTABLE white caulk. It should say paintable on the tube. Just like everyone said. Paint won't adhere to silicone caulk. For nail holes, I prefer spackle instead of painter's putty. Spackle is sandable, so you can also use it for any dings in wood. There is a spackle goes on pink, but dries white, and you can sand in an hour or so. I think it is also a DAP product.

A good quality acrylic vinyl tube caulk for any joints and painter's putty ( for painted trim nail holes) wood putty of appropriate color for stained trim. Available at paint departments everywhere.

I use DAP in either the 25 or 35 year varity for general sealing. For holes in wood, I like Elmer's wood filler, it is easy to use and finish and water cleanup. For nail holes in interior walls, again I use DAP Interior/Exterior Vinyl Spackling.

If its just for painting, use only painters caulk.
paint does not stick to anything silicone
