I would NOT suggest The Red Badge of Courage nor Across Five Aprils. Killer Angels is good (the novel on which the movie "Gettysburg" was based). Go to a Civil War Battlefield gift shop and look at their book selection. Gettysburg has a HUGE bookstore!

Newt's Gettysburg. A fictional what if, Lee had won the battle of Gettysburg. The references are historically consistent. Pretty good should hold their attention.
