How can I find out who supplies the gas and electricity to my new home?

You can find out who your gas supplier is by ringing the Transco Meter Helpline on
0870 608 1524.

You can find out who your electricity supplier is by ringing your local electricity distribution company. You should ask for their Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS). If you are not sure who the company is, contact energywatch.

Are you buying the flat, or renting. If you are renting maybe the electricity is included. If you are getting electricity and haven't gotten a bill you should be glad. Normally when you move into a house they ask you to have the electricity changed to your name. If it is included in the rent, if you are renting, it might not have come up. Call the agent you bought the house from, or contact he landlord. If they don't know call your city, or town hall and ask for utilities. They would know. Don't your neighbors know?

Is this a rental? I assume it is an apartment. Electricity is generally included in your rent. Check with you landlord. Most apartments do not have a separate meter for each unit. Condos, may have separate meters. Are you English? In the US apartments are rentals while condos are owned by an individual, A flat can refer to either. I wouldn't worry you are going to end up with some gigantic bill, if no one was paying it they would have turned it off by now, and you would only be responsible if the service was in your name.

Look in the yellow pages under Electric Companies and start at the top of the list and give them your address and continue until you find the one that's yours. I would be careful to continue to let this go on as it is a mistake that will eventually be found and then you could possibly get stuck with paying all those months in one large lump sum.

are you kidding? Have you asked the landlord? Or your neighbors? where are there bills coming from.

This information should have come in the package you signed when you leased the place, and the landlord should have turned service over into your name. Have you gotten any bills sent "to occupant" You will be responsible for those.

I find it VERY hard to believe that no one knows the name of the electric company for your building. That's ridiculous.

Ask people around you. Neighbors, public library, or just call the local electrical companies and give them your address. I'd catch this as soon as possible as it will only continue to accumulate and when they eventually figure it out and disconnect your service, you'll have to come up with a very large amount of money to get it turned back on.

If you have a lease it should say what is included in the rent. If not, ask the landlord straight out. Nothing is free and you could eventually end up having a huge bill to pay.

Just keep saving the money up, someone will want to cut your supply off eventually, treat yourself with the interest earned.
