I had surgery on my right foot in March 06. I was on crutches for 3 months. I lost a significant amount of muscle in that leg (enough to see a big difference with the naked eye). I’ve recently started exercising and started to wonder if I should have gone through physical therapy. Is it too late to start now? And if I don’t/can’t start now, are there any tips on getting my legs back to the same size while I work out in the gym?

We have to give our own body credit for allowing itself to heal. With most types of foot procedures that require a period of non-weight bearing, there will be some degree of muscle loss. Not all of them require PT afterwards. Our body has a great ability to heal itself and most cases will resume normal strength upon returning to your normal activities....but in moderation (ie, don't go out and try to run a mile your first day back to the gym)

If, however, there is a functional limitation...ie, you are not able to climb stairs safely, you cannot maintain your balance, etc, then physical therapy may be warranted. If there is a need for physical therapy, it is not too late to start.

I don't think it is ever too late. It may be more difficult now--as in hurting more and take longer. You could start some physical therapy and get suggestions of things that you could do at home. Also, I think you should have a therapist to tell you the things that you should do, after an evaluation. Anything that anyone could tell you on here could be the wrong therapy Good luck

Absolutely get into physical therapy. After my knee surgery I was delayed in getting into PT and had a similar issue. Actually went through physical therapy twice before having a full recovery...now there is no difference between my two leg sizes...

While you may have missed the optimal time where your body would respond best to treatment it is never too late to go to physical therapy. I would ask for a referral from your doctor that did the surgery. If they will not give you one you can go to your primary care doc and ask for one or you may have direct access in your state meaning you can go to a Physical Therapist without needing a referral from a doctor.

I wouldn't say it's too late. I would say you have to work harder.

Good luck!
