Most lighters work when the engine is off meaning that the sat nav will take power. Depending on how long you leave the car unattended it will eventually drain the battery. That being said it will not consume enough power to drain the battery in a couple of hours (but better to leave it unplugged to be sure).
If your lighter does not work when the key is out of the ignition you have no worries and can keep it plugged in.

Yes.
Your car has two sources of electricity - the alternator and the battery. The alternator only runs when the engine is running. If the alternator is not running the electricity to run your sat nav has to come from the battery.

Not knowing the year or type of car makes it hard to answer. In many older cars the cig lighter is shut down witht the key in the off position and some newer cars it stays on. Best way to tell is plug in your unit and see if it goes off/on with the key switch.

On my car it seems to charge the car, not the SatNav when the engine is off ! I think this is the case on most cars. I wouldn't try it really, SatNav systems are often quite hard to repair and of course, as fantastic as they are, the systems on them are nothing like computers. Also, it's worth knowing that you're not supposed to have the cigarette lighter charger plugged in when you are switching the engine on/off. Don't ask me why, but I believe it coz it seemed to screw up another system I had.

Eventually, yes. It depends on how long, how much power your nav sys is pulling, and the condition of your battery. If you need to leave it overnight, you will likely be OK. I wouldn't leave it longer than that.

The most a satnav unit will use is half an amp. If your battery is in good shape even a small one would be enough to run it for at least a week.

Won't damage the sat-nav but it may well end up getting nicked.

it depends on your car, alot of modern cars cig lighter won't work if the key's not in the ignition, but it's still not advisable. but, why would you want to? it just screams BREAK IN AND STEAL ME to any little twoc-ing gits that are loitering.
