It really varies from person to person. I was in labor for 16 hours, had an epidural (fabulous), delivered and had some problems. I really had a rough time.
But, my sister had her first within 6 hours and her second within 5 hours of beginning labor. She had no problems and was rather easy for her. She had the second one so fast, she was unable to be given any drugs.
Good Luck!

Labor isn't called labor for nothing but it is different for everyone. It might not be hard for you or even last long.Delivery just depends on the baby and how quick or slow it's coming.Between labor and delivery, labor is the hardest for most women.Just remember this, it's a labor of love and once you see the baby you forget the pain you went through.

I don't think it has to be hard at all.

I believe there is a HUGE self-fulfilling prophecy to childbirth.

If you think it will be horrible, it will be.

I've heard all the stories: it isn't called labor for nothing, everyone handles pain differently, etc

But everyone is focused on one thing: PAIN.

I don't believe that it must be painful.

I believe that fear causes tension, and tension causes pain.

Eliminate the fear, eliminate the tension, eliminate the pain.

I had two completely natural pain-free births. It IS possible.

It is your reaction to your contractions, when you tense, that causes them to become painful.

Now, it's easier said than done to stay relaxed. It is a skill that must be learned, especially when all the feedback you get is "go for the drugs".

Just remember, your body was MADE for this. You have all the tools to give birth.

I find it heartbreaking that women don't believe in their bodies anymore.

I feel it's also important to note that I believed this before I had my children. Also, my mother and sister had horrible experiences, so the whole family history thing is a mute point here as well.

It all just depends on the woman, and how she can deal with pain, you know.... I had an easy labor, with my Oldest daughter, because I always walked, everywhere!! I was not a lazy person and still aren't!!! But, I had a hard time with my last 3 children, and had to get the epedural..... With my boys, I labored 12 hours for both of them, and my youngest daughter 10 hours, and my oldest only 6 hours, and I had no pain with my oldest daughter!!! But with my other three, its like the worst "Charlie Horse" you ever had, that wont go away when you want it too. Then when the pain is gone you want to rest, then it comes back, and all the while your wife, or girlfriend should do her breathing's!!! TEE HEE, TEE-HEE........ Short TEE-HEEs!!! Deep inhales, and TEE-HEEs when she exhales!! She'll be just fine, you'll see!!! Smile!!!

Labor was much harder than the actually delivery. It is true what they say. You will forget exactly how that pain felt. You will just know that it hurt. I think you forget because what you are bringing in to this world is the most precious gift on God's green earth. Good luck to you if you are going to go through this in a few months.

Its different for everybody but both mine were painful...even when I had the epidural. With my first I was in labor for about 12 hours and I had the epidural which wore off when it was time to push so that was the painful part of that one. My second labor was only 2 hours and I was not able to get any drugs b/c it went too quick and I actually prefered it that way....much better imo. The epidural makes labor pain free for a lot but not for me, and it made it harder to push my son out with it. My second one I actually had to hold him back until the doctor rushed down and it was a relief to push him out. Good luck!

It depends on the woman. Ask about family history women tend to have similar labors to their moms. But this isn't always true. I personally had horrible labor and so did my mom. My mom's ended in c-section after 17 hours mine ended in c-section after 32 hours. I was induced while my moms water broke. So even if there are similarities every labor is as unique as the baby.

Things to remember.

This is not a contest and you will not be given an award for having your child naturally. So if you need them TAKE THE DRUGS!

Be nice to your nurses they dictate how pleasant your stay will be.

Just pray that you don't get back labor like I did.. I was induced because of high blood pressure. They enduced me around 8pm and like at 2 am had extrememly bad back labor.. if it hadn't been for that I would have been fine.. Was definetly not what I thought it would be. Had my daughter at 9am that morning..
