Get a new computer...

If you buy the newest, which would be Vista then you would need at least 512 MB of ram and a pentium 4 or athlon processor to run it, I would recommend getting either a cheap newer / new computer or upgrade to windows 2000 if NEED

buy a new computer!!!!! really. if your computer is only able to run 98, then there is NO possibility that it will safely run Vista (which is the latest windiws, although i;m not sure if its out yet........). you would be better off just using 98 until you can;t use it anymore and getting a new computer.

the reason that you cannot run a new OS on it is the amount of resources tha tit requires to run that OS is a lot higher than a previous version. for example. when windows XP boots up, it usually uses about 300MB of RAM. when vista boots up, it uses about 700MB of RAM (as of RC2, i'm not sure if microsoft has amnaged to optimize it at all.).

but if you insist on gettin a new OS, then you will most certainly need more RAM, probably a bigger hard drive (at least 50GB Minimum), a better graphics card, a faster CPU. since all the standard parts have changed since 98 was standard (amd has changed sockets for CPU's at least once, probably twice depending on the time you bought that) you will need a new motherboard. which is essentially a new computer. and you might need a more powerful power supply to run all this new stuff. sooooo the original parts that you are left with are: the case, the monitor, the keyboard.mouse, and some cables.

although building your own computeris by far the most cost effective way to upgrade, as long as you know what you are doing. so it may not be all bad news

If your running on 98 I seriously doubt it will be able to handle XP or Vista (properly) without major upgrading.
Your better off buying a new PC as already mentioned.

Check to see if your hardware is sufficient to run the new OS. Each OS will tell you basic requirements for RAM, HARD DRIVE space, processor speed, etc. although if you just meet the minimum requirements it will probably be too slow and you won't like it.

Make sure you backup all your important files before you install the new OS, in case anything goes wrong with the install.
