Why russians seems to be associated with heavy drinking in the 1900s?

Russians have always been associated with heavy drinking, in the Soviet era, there wasn't much else to do.

In some areas of Russia the answer is simple, can't go outside in the winter.

Others, the Russian people were subjected to a bunch of leaders that effectively bled them dry...

Most folks barley got by and still the government tried to take more. People used booze to soften the pain.

Why is britain having issues with ale , now? booze is booze we all like it too much! but the pressure of being in the u.s.s.r or a fromer eastern bloc nation state was enough to drive any one to drink on of the tenats in my building is from hungary and she drinks like a fish. she talks all the time about 1956 when the red army invaded budapest(hungary's capital). Vices are use by humans as a check in most cases against insanity.

I am Russian myself- it's part of the culture. Of course, doesn't mean everyone who is Russian is a heavy drinker,

My russian history teacher told many stories about the hugh drunk population he saw there. I guess they drink a lot and not in private

if you went from serfdom/slavery, servitude, poverty and oppression under the royalty, to the same under the commissars, to fighting off the nazis, to enduring stalin still, thereafter, with his ongoing reign of terror, etc. most people will try a bit of escapism, eh, especially via the most affordable means. hopelessness carries a high price. let's just wait and see how we in the west do after the nazi/illuminati types are in full swing here for a while (hopefully, their agenda will never be fulfilled, obviously) ;-)
