Well the recent scandals haven't helped. Most people can't do math and are frustrated by the tax system. Accountants can do math and the tax system, for a price. I think this agitates people.

In a way, we are business nerds. Popular culture usually doesn't show accountants as very exciting people. However most people aren't aware that most of your FBI, CIA investigators are accountants. Most of your fortune 500 CEO's are accountants.

Dependant upon what area you specialize in(audit, tax, advisory, etc.), you may not be able to get out much. We have to take a lot of continuing education credits. We are away from home for long periods of time. The typical accountants social life isn't seen as that great.

Think of how accountants were used by Enron and other corporations for fraudulent purposes that caused many to lose their pensions and retirement savings while enriching the executives responsible for the fraud.

This is the negative image you would have to reverse.

To make this image more positive, accounting firms have to be TRULY independent and report the truth regardless of what the companies want them to do (in trying to make the numbers to appear to be something else - as in the case of Enron).

Accountants are viewed as two things....depending on if they are tax or corporate accountants

1. Roadblocks to operations
2. Slimly snakes who get people out of paying taxes

I personally dont care so much as how Im viewed, my problem is that this view is often reflected in the salaries of accountants, in relation to operations people.

I simply dont know how accounting can make their importance known, and not be viewed as people who have jobs that can be done by anyone.
