ANTIVIRUS:Make sure you get somekind of antivirus. Scan your pc atleast weekly. Run your updates weekly as well. Updates are basicly new code that is released from the company to better protect your pc. Hackers are constantly coming up with new malicious code or "viruses." Your updates combat the new forms of malicious code. If you google some virus removal codes, you can sometimes get "removal tools" from online and just click a few buttons and repair your pc within minutes if you downloaded the right medicine for the right virus.
Setting up your antivirus:There are settings that allow you to program your antivirus pgm to scan your pc during certain times on certain days. I have mine set up to where it scans during the early morning when I don't use it. It scans weekly. I also update weekly.
AVOID VIRUSES & SPYWARE:Also avoid accessing/navigating through any websites that allow free sharing, free downloading,or internet game sites that allow you to play with others online, such as spades, solitaire, poker, etc. If you can play with other players online, most likely you will get a virus. What happens when you access these sites is that it opens a "backdoor" so others can access your network and install viruses or spyware. It could be the players, the website or its sponsors (advertisements or ribbons). When the website or its sponsors do it, it's called spyware.
Spyware is basicly a tracker that is installed on your pc through advertisements that you click on. Once it attaches itself, it tracks your personal internet traffic (websites visited, ads clicked, etc). It sends this information back to its source and is used for market analysis on you. Then you begin to receive spam to your e-mail address, such as penis enlargements ads or creams if you accessed porn, rebate offers for tech gadgets if you clicked a lot on tech toys ads, etc. If the information it collected reflected your interest in something in particular, you will receive spam. So the spyware isn't meant to destroy your pc,but the longer you go to these sites and the longer it goes unidentified, the more spyware you collect. Once your pc begins to collect so much spyware it takes up space on your terminal and begins to slow your internet down, pages will take longer to open. Spam is illegal (hard to identify the sources)and some ads are also illegal because once you click on the red box where the "X" is (to close the ad), it will automatically take you to another page. These ads are "booby-trapped." A good idea to get around these are when you are suspicious of an ad, place your mouse over the "x" and observe your address bar (lower part of your screen) to see if there is an address. If there is, then do not click on it. You can either wait a few seconds or close the ad from the slide bar (right click and scroll to"close"). Most "funny ads" that display a box to close the ad will normally be a different shade of color. You'll get better at identifying them as you become more accustomed to the internet's ads.
SPACE: Your pc came with a manufacture's storage space. Anything and everyhting that you save, download or install on your pc takes up space. Simply said: If you don't need it, don't install or download it. If you have downloading programs, such as limewire (music, videos, etc), make sure you DISCONNECT THEM after each use. As long as they are still connected, you have a back door open for others to "walk in or out" of your network.I only have mine open when I am downloading some tunes and then I close it after I am done. I also have my set my share settings to one download at a time. This means that when I am dowloading tunes, others can only download one song from my network at a time. It's like having the door cracked instead of wide open. This frustrates most users, but it protects me.
This is all you basicly need to know to keep your pc running efficiently. Your antivirus will help, but you help it when you are a smart browser, as well. I was constantly getting viruses on my pc until I discovered that my wife was playing spades and solitaire on-line with other players instaed of being with me giving me some good lovin'. I resolved that issue by purchasing some cheap game software programs ($3-$14.00) from big-lots or target. It is also wise to "back up" your files once a month or every other month. "back up" is to save or transfer all your documents, such as resumes, picture files, school reports, etc into a disc or CD (also may be purchased at a store for cheap). In the event that your systems crashes, you will still have your important documents saved so you can re-install them or resubmit them into your pc after you get it repaired.
PS. do NOT eccept or OPEN any e-mail/attachments from strangers,ESPECIALLY FROM NIGERIA OR WITH ANY OF THESE WORDS:MONEY,NEXT OF KIN,BUSINESS,BANK OF UR,REPUBLIC,ELECTRONIC, TRANSACTION,ACCOUNT NUMBER,ETC!!!!

I assumed everything has been set up for you.All you need is proper maintenance of your PC e.g
Do not place the system too close to the wall
Do keep food, water, rags or anything that could ignite smoke or fire close to your PC
Always read what read appears in front of your monitor before deleting, cancelling or accepting,it will save you from unnecessary stress.
Before leaving your home always remember to switch your PC off,as well as before going to bed.It will save you a lot of money and also make your PC last long.
It also important to install software that will help your PC run better/do not install software you do not need.
You need to scan you PC with various scanner periodically to make sure there is virus or spyware undetected
Good luck and enjoy your new computer

ok first of all you need to be safe
1. make sure you have antivirus and firewall (protection from hackers) installed and up to date.
2. get an anti-spyware program such as adaware and run it weekly
3. if you get an email saying you have won any kind of lottery, you haven't its just a scam. also if a bank emails you saying your contact details need updating its also a scam.
ok now the basic security stuff it out of the way....
you will probably want movies, music and games.
if you want them for free look into a program called bittorrent and a site called www.isohunt.com (for movies and games), also a program called limewire (for the music).
99% of free movies and music is illegal... but you probably have more chance of winning the lottery than getting caught.
next if your using internet explorer to view web pages then change to something called firefox, it is the same as internet explorer but much safter and i think overall a lot better.
if you haven't used it before then download something called google earth, you can view the whole planet and zoom in very close to satelite photo's of anywhere on earth, you can find a lot of interesting stuff like volcanoes, area 51, your house.... i can sometimes spend hours on it.
you will also probably want to be setting yourself up an ebay account.
theres so much more i just can;t cover it all here.

I would take a basic computer course. That may help you, plus everyone there will be asking questions and all the responses may be of help to you.
Generally library's, or local schools have these classes quite inexpensively.
enjoy your PC.
