I also have a 4-month old son who has that problem (if untreated).

His pediatrician initially recommended Vaseline, but we asked her if Aquaphor (by Eucerin) is okay, and she said that was much better, but more expensive. So Aquaphor is what we use for our son, and it has worked very well as long as we use it at least daily.

We were also told to go light on the soap or avoid it if possible, and not to use any fragrant lotions where it may come in contact with sensitive skin.

Johnson's Soothing Naturals is the stick recommended by the other poster. It worked very good for a while, but my son had gotten eczema all over his face while we were using it... that's not to say it's BECAUSE of it, but we stopped using it just to be safe.

My daughter has had very dry skin since she was little as well! She'll be 2 next week...Eucerin is wonderful we liked it a lot more than Aquaphor because it is less greasy. When our daughter was about a year old our nanny brought over a sample of baby lotion from Kiehls and now we swear by it! It is a little pricey but it does wonders for our girls skin.

My son has very dry skin. I use both the Cetaphil lotion and body wash, it's frangrance free and dematologist recommended.. Make sure to put your lotion on your baby within 9 minutes after bathing to help lock in the moisture, however, the biggest difference has been made by our water softning system. We had on installed by culligan and it has made a huge difference! They're not cheap ($4k) but definately worth it. My son's skin was only an added bonus to having good water.

There is a product called Aquaphor, you can buy it at Walmart for about $7 for a jar of it. I use it on my son's extremely dry skin at night, and he also has eczema and allergies.

I was introduced to the Aquaphor product when I worked on the cancer unit at a hospital. This was the most gentle, mild thing that we could use on patients who were undergoing chemotherapy treatments. The only drawback is that it is like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) so it can get somewhat greasy. This is why I apply it to my son at nighttime. However, you can use it anywhere, even on chapped lips. When I use it on my lips it stays on for hours, which actually surprised me. It really works on dry skin and is very gentle, which is what you want for your little one.

Vaseline has been the ticket for me and my children. You may want to try the A&D ontiment(yellow box, aloe vera) that is use for baby's bottom. I used a little on my daughter's cheeks (face) and it works like a charm. I figured if it prevents the affects of wetness on the bottom it can do the same for the wetness on her cheeks from all her saliva.

Olive oil is good and very safe. Lanolin will soak in more and work a little better, but olive oil is easier to find.

If you live in the cold and go out often put vaseline on before going out. This prevents chapping and windburn.
