Many of the super villian's have skimpy outfits on too, they just like girls in skimpy outfits regardless of if she is good or evil.

Yeah so?! The general online public know it's demeaning but no one is doing something about it. This is the ONLY good advice a comic book reader can ever give to people who ask these type of questions: Do something about it or get off the soap box.
Nobody complained when there were scenes of bondage in the early issues of "Wonder Woman". Black Canary debuted in 1947 was the first superheroine noted to be wearing 'skimpy outfits'. Throughout the years her costume has not been changed for a very long time.
Anyone can go on for hours defending the right to creativity. One side of the coin people will agree with you. Flip it over and people will agree there's nothing wrong with sex appeal just as long it's within good taste. "Don't judge characters by their looks but by their actions."

Yeah, because the target market for most comics and such are men. Then again, male characters are often have broad, idealistic features as well which serves as a type of projection for the male reader. Defined features sell more than realistic one, and it's sometimes the writers having a Romantic Mary Sue in there.
XD We can always make the excuse that the shorter/skimpy clothes are also easier to draw than elaborate cloaks and such and practical clothes...

You're right. The only female superhero I can think of that doesn't wear a skimpy cossie would be Gatecrasher (of Gatecrasher's Technet)-see old issues of Captain Britain or Excalibur for details. Then again, I don't think she was a hero, more a villain...

Being a guy I have noticed that female super heroes are usually not lacking in the curves department, but they actually are usually completely dressed. Some of course are showing skin, but that actually changes little because MOST superheroes (be they male or female) wear spandex or something else equally clinging.
Did YOU notice that male superheroes are somewhat musclebound AND showing it off?
It's just a fact that overstated body images sell. I am still upset that I don't look like spiderman, and my wife doesn't look like catwoman!

LOL!!! Yeah, and did you ever notice in the Gen13 comic series, everytime Fairchild got into a fight, no matter what she had on, it would almost always be ripped apart, down to the bare minimum she could have on... They even started making it a running joke in the series and acknowledged it, breaking the 4th wall on more than one occation.

Yes, they do always have on skimpy outfits. It's because men are chauvinist pigs and get off on seeing girls who aren't real show more skin then they themselves can ever see in regular life.

yes, this is to cater to men who are the primary purchasers of comics.
Personally I think all women who are pretty should be required by law to wear skimpy outfits, those that are ugly should be required by law (make it a capital offense) to wear trash bags on thier head and body so we don't have to look at them.
