Honestly, what use is a cell phone? Yes, it keeps you in constant contact with your friends, family and co-workers. But is it necessary? They disrupt classrooms, libraries, and distract drivers. Parents love to know where their child is, and children love to know where their friends are, and will even text them whenever they get a chance. Children at FIVE years old have text-enabled cell phones. Why? Has our society become so trend-happy that EVERYONE needs a cell phone?

I held out for a long time before getting a cell phone. What did it for me was having my alternator go out on me in the middle of nowhere on a hot summer day with two small children and a pregnant friend - and no way to call for assistance. It is a luxury to have, but in an emegency it can be very important.

Personally I don't think children of any ages need cellphones. Cell phones are big responsibility, making sure that you don't go over your minutes, making sure to pay the bill on time. Learning that cell phones are meant for casual use and cell phones should never replace a landline.

Cells are great for businesses and law enforcement. Children having text enabled phones at the age of 5 is the most nonsensical thing I've ever heard. I was 16 when I got a cell phone. I used it all night long. I should've never been allowed to get one at that age. I got rid of it and just purchesed one in March of last year. If it wasn't for the great plan my BF and I have we wouldn't have ours.

there are a lot of items we class as "essential" but none of them are really necessary. We don't need phones, but they can be useful.
