I think that you just were unfortunate enough to draw a lemon. I'm sure all Acer computers don't work like the one you bought. Gateways been selling computers for a long time and have a decent reputation, but you can get a lemon in any brand.

They are about average performance.
They cost more only because you are paying for the name.
The biggest problem with them is that they come with Windows installed and you are paying for that whether you want it or not.
I prefer to choose my own OS and I don't like to be told that If I buy a Gateway that I also have to buy Windows. :(
Mac actually supports their Computers and OS as a unified system where as Microsoft and the PC manufactures pass the proverbial buck back and forth until you finally give up on support.

They are great laptops. I've had mine for more than a year and it still works perfectly fine. My sister recently purchased a new Gateway and it works fine.

The only issue that I've heard of is the screen hinge cracking. Mine has never done that, but I watch out for it. Other than that it shouldn't be a problem.

As with all companies, they sometimes have faults, but generally their computers are good quality. Bear in mind though that most business's will sell good quality computers (except eBay, which can vary) or trading standards would close them
