I agree with some of "victory's" answer above, and especially what "AMDG" said. I do have a lot of respect for Martin Luther King, and what he stood for. And we should observe this holiday. But "victory's" reference to Presidents Day is also correct. You have got to remember that if it wasn't for George Washington, who stated the ball rolling and Abraham Lincoln, who freed the slaves, there probably would not have been a Martin Luther King.

It's fine to honor him, but I think there are too many Federal Holidays. Kids seem to be out of school too much during the school year for holidays, Mid-Winter breaks, Spring Break, etc. I think that the schools should stay open and have the teachers focus on talking about who is being honored that day. Kids are already going to school until the middle of June as it is.

I think that the lady was being racist. Martin Luther King JR did a lot for his people and he should be honored with a Federal holiday.

I would like to think that if MLK were alive today (or we had the opportunity to speak with him) he would shun this type of holiday.

I think he would not want us to look at the past and see how far we have come, but rather to look at the future and see what we need to do - then work on those changes.

Sadly, MLK day has turned into just another day off. Retail sales in his "honor", no bank, no mail, no government, no education, no opportunity to learn what exactly Dr. King wanted to change in the world.

Perhaps she was bemoaning the fact that King was not a government official, or maybe she just wanted her mail. Even if she was being racist, racism is based on fear and fear is based on ignorance. The solution is not punishment but education and experience.

I find it surprising that M.L. King's Birthday IS a federal holiday but I'm glad of it. I think less about the man than what he stands for, and I think more federal holidays should be that way, about ideas, not just iconic figures. MLK lets us think about the persistence and cost of racism, the appropriateness and effectiveness of non-violent protest and the role of religion in social change. (George Washington's Birthday makes us think of Valley Forge, cherry trees and wooden teeth, sadly.)

People who actively resent MLK Day likely do not understand it and are afraid of changing if they did. It's not about "blacks win, whites lose", it's about breaking down class barriers and learning how to treat each other as equals. Shouldn't every other federal holiday be as thoughtful?

Victory has hit it on the head. American history is on its way out in this country. Do you have any idea who Alexander Hamilton was? Why don't you go to your schools and complain about the failure of non american history classes. Try and finid a Western Civilization class in a High School. MLK is a great person, but we forget about the rest. So who's the racist?

Hi, sweetie, is it possible you meant me?

MLK Day is a nice idea, but I wish they'd keep the banks open, and deliver our mail.

I also think that if we celebrate MLK, we should certainly celebrate George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as we once did (we now have the so-called "Presidents' Day", and most kids under 12 can't tell you which presidents are being honored...or why).

Again, nothing wrong with MLK Day, but it's more important to honor the men who shaped the country, rather than those who merely fine-tuned it.

MLK was a shaper of this society, not just someone who "fine-tuned" it. He helped bring representation to a large section of this country's population. If you watch some of the old interviews from the 1960s of MLK, you realize even more what a deep and humane person he was.
