Others have explained what it is.
On a normal car, almost all it will do is make more noise. Many are loud enough to annoy people, maybe even get you a ticket in some places.
But, on a normal car, any power gains will be trivial.

Cat back means from the catalytic converter "back" to the exhaust opening. That is, it's a single device that does this, not several pieces welded together.
It's for all cars, or CAN be, but it as a single device it is generally more expensive and typically tuned for a specific "type" of car, usually performance. Corvette, Mustang, etc., all have "cat back" types of exaust made for them, but each exhaust is built differently for the year, model, and type of car.
And actually, it CAN make quite a bit of difference, either in loudness and/or horsepower & torque. Again, it has to be one that's made FOR that make, year and model.

Generally, it refers to all the exhaust components installed from the output of the catalytic converters to the tailpipe exit at the rear of the car. Performance mufflers and tailpipes could be installed for somewhat lower backpressure and a little more horsepower, but you won't notice the difference. The exhaust manifolds at the engine and exhaust pipes can increase horsepower noticeably especially with bigger exhaust pipes and dual mufflers and tail pipes (dual exhaust system). However, this may affect your computer control calibrations adversely and require a retuning of the computer calibrations for proper engine operation and emissions performance.

I agree with the others, that a cat back exhaust will probably not produce a noticeable increase in horsepower. It may however give your car a unique sound that identifies you, and your car as something special. If that's important to you, go for it.

Cat Back, everything for the cat convertor back. Sometimes it isnt neccessary to replace the pipes unless they are rusted out. I just put on a high flow cat and a Flowmaster 40....on my Durango, it sounds sweet! You can put this on any car.
