You can, but you need to prep the steel with a binder paint that will stick to the metal and then you can paint on that binder. If you paint directly, there is a chance of it not sticking for too long.

Usually spit and the oils from your finger. When its gone, clean with your regular cleaner. Oils do the trick though.
