In the Spanish legal system of race in New Spain a "mestizo" originally was defined as the offspring of a European and an Indian, or the child of two mestizos. a person who was three quarters Indian some time called a " cholo"or "castizo". There are other words for ever more fractional amounts of Spanish, Indian and *****( mulatto) blood used variously thought Latin America. A Criollo was a wholly Spanish person born in America. Yet a person who over time lost their appearance as an Indian could and did pass as a Criollo without comment.

Race is crazy, yet we all play it. Some just carry it to grander levels of foolishness. The word mestizo has come to be simply a person of mixed ancestry..
