No I don't think they do. They start out parting with others to look cool. Then the drink becomes more important than the parting, family, work, grandchildren, or even their own children. Way to go Joni B. That's the same thing I was told when me ans my mom were trying to help dad off the sauce though we never won and now my mom's dead from trying to help him and his new wife is starting to see what me and my kids were telling her. I'm an only child and my girls are his only grand kids but now he is taking over her family cause they don't know him as well as we do. They say if he drinks again it will kill him but they have been saying this for years and all he's done is make himself more miserable along with us. I don't know what else to do with him he went to AA then when he left he went and bought him a bottle of whiskey. He will lie to us and tell us he's quit only to be caught again. Even his old Dr are threw with him so he goes and gets new ones and won't tell them he drinks.Oh well

Of coarse not! Who would wish death for him/her self unless they're really depressed or under high pressure. Some times bad friends negatively affect a person and push him/her to bad habits such as alcoholism. Lack of self-control has a role too.

how much time you got? go do some research. Absolutely not!
That's like asking if a diabetic chooses it, or a cancer victim chooses it. Its a friggin disease. But, there is something you can do about it.
We admitted that we were powerless over alcohol, and that our lives have become unmanageable.
Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understood Him.
One day at a time...

Most of the time no, I don't think it was their original intent - however, I know people who did actually just choose to be - yes. Either way - sad.

to some extent. alcoholism is somewhat genetic, so some people are born genetically inclined to become alcoholics. Of course they have free will to say no to drinking and break the cycle of alcoholism in their family.

that was not billy's intention when he started out as good time charlie but that is where he ended up, billy's diagnosis as alcoholic comes from the medical profession, he argued with them but they say that is just denial, maybe they're right
