No one knows. They occasionally make little jokes about that fact. In one episode, they actually come close. Homer is talking (I can't remember about what exactly) but he says "We are saying goodbye to Springfield--" and they cut off before he can say the state. It's a running joke...there is a Springfield in almost every state, so we can't say for sure.

I know that they have hinted to the state for many years, but have never made a specific state known...Maybe the movie will shed some light on this.

Here is what is posted on wikipedia

The Simpsons is set in the fictional American city of Springfield. The state in which it is located has never been made clear, and it is not actually intended to exist in any specific state. Nevertheless, throughout the show's history, fans have tried to determine where Springfield is by taking the town's characteristics, surrounding geography and nearby landmarks as clues. As a response, the show has become intentionally deceptive about the state, and nearly every state and region in the U.S. has been both suggested and ruled out by conflicting evidence. Groening has stated that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city he grew up in,[34] and the name "Springfield" was chosen because it is a common city name, appearing in more than thirty states. The geography of Springfield and its surroundings is seen to be flexible and has been shown to contain coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, and tall mountains, or whatever a story or joke requires.

If you are patient and have the time, I suggest watching all the episodes with a list of the 50 states, and cross out any state that is mentioned in such a way that you know they're not referring to their own state. Example: The ep I saw last night, they mentioned going "Branson, Missouri". If they lived in Missouri, they wouldn't need to mention the state name, right? Happy hunting!

Everyone will tell you Illionios but no one knows for sure. They never state it on the show. There's practically a Springfield in every state.

Springfield could be one of many states, but they're careful enough to give information that contradicts itself. There are some sites that argue for different states.

There are theories about which Springfield it is based on. From what I understand, there are 5 posibilities. All of which have strong arguments. But only Matt knows...and we may never.

There are several states, Misouri and Massechusetts to name a few: You know, I've always thought of the Simpsons as "cerebral pizza" Let me explain. Pizza is generally thought of as junk food. However it is made up of nutritional ingredients. Likewise, sitcoms and cartoons are often deemed as junk food for the brain, and the Simpsons actually have some very thought provoking and intelligent storylines. My favorite character is, of course, Lisa.
