Well you should have two different colored pills. Three rows will be one color (like mine are blue) and one row will be another color (mine are white for example.) The one row that's a different color is the one you take while you're on your period. They're sugar pills and do NOT protect you from pregnancy. It's just to allow your body to have a period and keep you on schedule (some people would forget to start taking the pill again if they quit taking it for a whole week while on their period). You can take the active pills when you're supposed to have your period to avoid having a period if that's what you're talking about. My doctor confirmed that it's completely safe as long as you don't do it all the time. You just keep taking the active pills instead of switching to the placebos. I do this sometimes when having a period is very inconvenient, like when I'm going to the beach or wanting to spend some alone time with my boyfriend

Generally you take the pill for 21 days then stop for 7. During the 7 days off is when you tend to get your period, but if your wanting to not get your period then you can continue to take your pill non stop for up to 3 months. Not longer. Thats way your body can get a break.
