Why does it do this and how can i stop it? I connect to the internet via AOL 9.0. I have AOL broadband at a standard 100.0 Mbps speed. Sometimes, it doesn't restart itself for a couple of hours, sometimes i get 10-15minutes max before it restarts.

thanks for the answers so far but the reason i put 'while i'm connected to the internet' is because it literally does only happen while i'm on the net. Whenever i'm just using the computer itself it's fine.

It is most likely a hardware fault. Your PC would probably blue screen (crash screen) but you have the setting set to "automatically restart" so your not getting to see the error message on the blue screen.

To change this setting right click on my computer, go to the advanced tab, then click the startup and recovery - Setting button, within this tab uncheck the "automatically restart box".

The next time your PC would of restarted, it will probably now show a blue screen with an error message.
This error message is the key to finding out the source of the problem

In my experience the most common hardware fault that causes a blue screen\crash is faulty memory. You could try changing that as a good starting point.

If it is only happening if you are connected to the internet there may be a problem with your network card or USB that your AOL modem is connected to. Although I think this is unlikely.

Viruses cannot reset your PC, they could make your PC shutdown and reboot, but not just switch off and reboot.

It could be heat related but not likely if you are experiencing this after 10 mins of use. - Check the fans anyway.

Are you confident it relatively is that the only time the workstation is crashing? If it relatively is crashing like that for the period of alternative circumstances it must be a hardware difficulty. Is it a workstation or a Mac? residing house windows XP? Vista? what variety of internet connection are we coping with? Is it dial-up or are you utilising the LAN port and a community cable? no remember if that's a dial-up connection you ought to objective deleting the dial-up connection on top of issues Panel/community Connections and create a sparkling one. i might additionally recommend an entire virus test. between the 1st issues i might do is backup any significant documents - records, photographs etc on the grounds which you could could wipe the annoying force and function residing house windows reinstalled. right this is a attempt you ought to objective - initiate the workstation in risk-free Mode with Networking (reboot the workstation and as that's commencing up shop pressing the F8 key till you spot a catalogue with risk-free Mode with Networking). as quickly as in risk-free Mode attempting connecting to the internet - does it nevertheless crash? If no longer then it recommend that there is a software inflicting it, if it nevertheless crashes then it must be too time ingesting or costly to repair. The wipe and reinstall residing house windows may be your maximum inexpensive decision interior the long-term. Do you have any tech acquaintances close by? Get them to take an extensive look. Could be an overheating problem. Try turning it off, unplug & touch the chassis to discharge static. Then brush out the dust/crud that's in there with a new, unused small paintbrush & blow the rest out with a can of compressed air from the PC shop.

All PCs collect dust & fluff, and too much can lead to components overheating & causing it to shut down.

Hope this helps.

I highly doubt this has to do with connecting to the internet, the more likely source of the problem is either the power supply is going back or your having heat issues and it is causing the machine to restart. Also check to make sure that all you cables, especially the power cable are firmly connected

What are you browsing when it happens? If the fan is full of dust, it can overheat when the processor is dealing with demanding applets, such as Flash. If you are browsing animations or flash games, and the computer overheats, it will shut down/restart. This happened to me. Cleaned out the fan and it worked fine.

I'd check your fans. You might want to get some canned air and blow out the dust. Intermittent shutdowns are usually caused by a component overheating, or perhaps the power supply is having problems.

It could be a number of things. Many times, it's related to a virus but it could be a loose wire, overheating, a setting. I suggest running a virus program first (there are free utilities online) and then if that doesn't help, try some of the suggestions in the links below.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
