The word 'gay' doesn't actually mean 'happy' ... it means 'light of heart' and the 'gays' I have known use that term for their homosexuality because it means the exact opposite of the treatment they get from most 'straight' people. It's a BAD JOKE that has gone on so long that now 'gay' means 'homosexual' and is rarely used to mean 'light of heart' when we're communicating with other people.
