A great novel - definitely! His writing style is unique and I think Middlesex outclasses the Virgin Suicides (which is a good start but...). In a way, I'm unhappy with the way he 'resolves' his protagonist's intersexuality - as if 'nature' was completely reigning gender constructions - he should have read Judith Butler and Judith Halberstam - the debate is going on. But that doesn't affect his being a reflective, intelligent and gifted author! It looks like a tendency in American literature to 'work off' American history, beginning with John Updike and Philip Roth, and they're all doing a great job, e.g. Richard Powers with his unique The Time of our Singing and even Rick Moody with The Diviners.
Anyway, I am eagerly awaiting Eugenides' next novel, hope it won't take as long as the last time.....
