Yes, I have twice lost my big toenail on my left foot. (crazy huh)
The first time, I fouled a baseball off of my toe two pitches in a row. IT took 11 months before it finally fell off, though it was purple, bruised, and had blood trapped under it. Then it took about 4 or 5 months to grow back.
The second time, somebody stomped on it while playing soccer. This time it only took about 3 months to fall off, but the new nail had already started growing underneath it. It has been about 1.5 months since then, and I bet it will only be 2 months til it is back to normal.

Hi,
Ouch, you have brought back some memories now, lol ! Yes, I lost a fingernail when I was 6 and I remember how distraught I was !
It happened in a church of all places !! I was resting my finger on one of the pews, the seat was raised, one of the largest ladies ( although she was a lovely person) I had ever seen walked over, patted me on the head, pulled the seat down.....with my finger still under it, and sat on it !!!!!!
Well,,,I screamed blue murder, but she still sat there looking at me all confused , it took them all about 5 minutes to figure out why this poor child was screaming so much ( heck, I can laugh about it now, it was 31 years ago..and funnily enough, I haven't really spent much time in a church since then ) but it was not funny at the time ! I lost my nail 2 days later after my finger became the size of a small sausage, and the colour of the rainbow. It took quite sometime to grow back, and it was very sore , but it looks perfectly normal thankfully. It could have been worse, I could have lost my entire finger !

I once almost lost 7 fingernails in an accident. They all went black and I was lucky none did fall out. I crushed them in a heavy metal door!
My Dad lost his toe nail (dropped a sledge hammer on it, poor old Dad) and that has taken over 8 months to grow fully back.

My finger got caught in a storm door after a big gust of wind slammed it shut. The nail was all black and blue so we had to cut the nail off and wait for it to grow back. I'd say it took a few months--didn't seem like it took all *that* long. I wonder if you could take a hair, skin and nails supplement (can find it at about any drugstore) to help it regrow faster. Just a thought...

I trapped my little toe in a car door... the nail came off and after about 6 weeks it had grown back.
If you have damaged the area just above the were your nail starts growing it may not grow properly. I don't think there is anything you can do about it either.

I once shut my thumb in the car door. Worst pain ever, my nail didnt come off but it bleed under it so had to go to hospital to have a hole made in it to release the pressure. Took months to heal and grow out. Now i always keep my hands out of the way when i shut the car door....

I hit my thumb once with a hammer (who hasn't) it took about a week for the nail to fall completely off and about 8 weeks for it to grow back. I kept a band aid on to protect the nail bed until it was completely covered again.
