Any good advice teaching times tables to a 7 year old.

9 + 10 times table is ok (do you know the 9 x trick?)

I'm assuming that this 7 year old is already a wiz with addition and subtraction? Does this 7 year old already know how to do basic word problems with addition and subtraction?

Before getting to the times tables do some counting by 2's and 5's. Work on the 2's table first, then skip to the 5's. There's no law that says you have to go in order. After 5's go back to the 3's and so on. Try using some sort of manipulative device, like popsicle sticks, to teach the concept of multiplication. For example, put out two groups of popsicle sticks with three sticks in each group. This is an example of 2 groups of 3 or 2x3. Let your 7 year old arrange some groups. Later this will help in understanding that even though 2x3 and 3x2 yield the same answer, they represent different concepts. 3x2 is 3 groups of 2 rather than 2 groups of 3. This will also come in handy when you get to division. Put 6 sticks in a group. Divide into groups of 3. How many groups do you have? What if you divide the 6 into groups of 2? Please note that the times tables really go from 0 times up to 9 times. One trick for the nines is to write out the nines from 0x9 to 9x9 in a vertical row. Then starting with 9x1= put a 0 after the =. For 9x2=put a 1 and so on until you get to 9x9=and you put an 8 after the=. Then go back up the vertical row and put a 1 after the 8, a 2 after the seven and so on. It should look like this.

9x1=09
9x2=18
9x3=27
9x4=36
9x5=45
9x6=54
9x7=63
9x8=72
9x9=81

Notice that when you add the digits in the answers they always equal 9. This will not always be the case when you get to greater numbers, but whenever you multiply by 9 and add the digits in the answer you should be able to divide the result by 9 without a remainder. Example, 9x25=225, 2+2+5=9; 9x103=927, 9+2+7=18, 18/9=2.

to do the 9 times table you could try the thing you do with your hand. It's hard to explain so bear with me....
Put both your hands out in front of you, when you fold down your thumb on your left, you are left with 9 digits/fingers. So 1 x 9 = 9.
put up your thumb and fold down your first finger.
Now you have 1 digit on the right, which counts as 10, and 8 on the left...so 2x9=18.
The rule is that anyfingers/thumbs on the left are the 10's (10,20,30etc.) and any to the right of the finger you folded down are units (1,2,3 etc.)

Also, when i was 9, i had a brilliant teacher who taught us the times tables by singing and playin the guitar (like in school of rock but much better)!

The best way to learn the times table is the one which I have learnt and always follow the same ... there's no trick ..though you may have a way of remembering them ..some tip or helping to make you remember..it my be longer and confuse you.
Do it simply . write the 2 ,3, 4, etc times table in order and make them recite each
2 X 2 =4
2 X 3 =6 etc etc .
It makes it easier to say and there is no confusion in the mind of the child .
By the way i knew my tables by the age of two and three...
Look at the copied tables consistently. Apply them etc

Yes I know the 9 x's trick, When I was a nipper (pre calculator days) this worked for me, Take a sheet of graph paper, put a zero in the top left hand corner and then 1 - 12 along the top and ditto down the left hand side and get then to fill in the grid, you could highlight the square numbers (7x7 etc) if you like.

my nephew, age 3, had a blackboard on the wall opposite his bed. His parents would chalk up the times tables, starting with 2 x 2, next night 3 x 3 i.e. from 1 x 3 to 12 x 3. He would learn them, recite them, for fun! before too long he wanted to go above 12 x 12!

Id give each child a times table to remember. E.G group 2 have to remember that 2x7= 14, group 3 have to remember 3x7=21 etc.
Then they can recite them in order while you record on the board. You can always rely on children knowing what the other groups times table will be, they are just naturally nosey like that. then you've solved your problem, they'll know the complete7x table.

im 13 so i no this stuf
the 9x trick is with ur fingers
put the 2nd finger(4 example) down an u gt 1 finger up on v left hand side an 8 up on v right hand said. so v answer 2 2 times 9 is 18, coz 1 with 8 afta it is 18
i gota agree though tht repetition helps loads
