If you have two sets, X and Y, then X is a subset of Y if every element in X is also in Y. Or more simply, a subset is just a part of a set.

For example, if X was the set of all last names found in a telephone book, the all the last names in it beginning with the letter "M" would be an example of a subset of X. Likewise, the set of all rational numbers is a subset of the real numbers. Guitars is a subset of musical instruments, since any guitar also falls into the category of being "a musical instrument". Etc.

As you'd know a set is just a group. Anything can be a group/set e.g. numbers, books I have, the alphabet, people with blonde hair ...

A subset is a set which is a set itself, but all members of that set are part of a larger set as well.

In symbol notation, we usually use that stretched 'C' symbol. So {red C colours} means that red is a subset of colours, or that red is a smaller part of the big set called colours.

Other examples are:

shirts C clothes (all shirts are part of another bigger set: clothes)
class C year group (your class is a 'sector'/subset of the set year group)

Hope this helps!

We say that set A is a subset of set B if every element of A is also an element of B.

Examples:
The set of natural numbers is a subset of the set of real numbers.
The set of all house cats is a subset of the set of all felines.
The set of of plays by Shakespeare is a subset of the set of all English plays ever written.

Subsets of any set are defined as the sets which are formed by taking any combination of elements.

for example a set A { a1,a2, a3, a4, .........., an} contains n element the subsets of A are formed by either by taking on or any number of element or not taking one or any number of element.
it means for each element there are two possibilities either it may present or absent.
therefore total number of subset of A becomes 2*2*2*......up to n = 2^n

If you have two sets, say one set of summer clothes, one set of winter clothes, items that would go the subset would be things that can be counted as summer or winter clothes....in other words things that could belong to both groups

Hope that helps.

Imagine I have a 3 bags...green balls, blue balls, red balls each colour in each bag. I put all the bags in a box labelled BALLS. So I can put it in this way...

Balls = {green, red, blue}

The box is a set of balls. Green bag is a subset of box. So its like a group in a group....thats subset.
