It helps, but it is not absolutely necessary. If you travel through the enquiring process steadily and patiently, you will ultimately learn the TRUTH.AND it is that the last GURU is Your own Self.

You can certainly learn from a guru if the guru himself is knowledgeable otherwise it will be like blind leading the blind. In some cultures especially in the Hindu culture the guru is considered equal or even better than god but in ancient times there were realized souls and their purpose of existence was to lead the people to the right path, but now the gurus are all after money and power and rather them guiding their followers they often misguide them. In this situation one is better of without a guru.

If your looking for some restitution or the solution to a problem, you need look know farther than yourself. Leave god out of it. Heaven is right here on earth. It is in a song you like, a place you like to hang out, maybe just driving down the road. Try a ten or fifteen minutes of meditation. Breathe deeply in the nose and out the mouth and think of nothing. You can find your center all by yourself. You don't need a preacher, monk, cardnal, bishop, or any other religious figure. Good luck, hope you find your happiness.

These people are helpful, and the more compassionate the better, but they do not live YOUR life, only you do that. Bearing that in mind, you should remember that you need to make your own decisions, but using their advice and wisdom to conclude an action is a valuable practice. Just think about it, is all, don't just assume because your adviser is in a revered position like a Preacher doesn't mean s/he is correct.

Buddha said "If you see the Buddha on the road, kill him". Meaning wisdom comes from within and no external force will have the answer, you provide that.

if yes, i would absolutely choose a true guru, associated with an "eastern path", over a preacher. never have so many known so little of true value as do the "preachers" in western society. in the eastern esoteric tradition, the lamas/gurus, etc. emphasize discovering who and what one truly is via the time honored methods of meditation and "energy work": yoga, chi kung, etc. they offer a true "path of initiation". thus, they aid you to reach deep levels of consciousness wherein you "find yourself". one benefit of this approach is that "challenges" in your life become easier to understand and "answer" by yourself. or, if need be, they'll provide guidance. and, you'll know that this help comes from a wise person. i've never met a real lama or "guru" whose consciousness level was less than 20 times that of jerry falwell, pat robertson, elmer gantry/billy graham, or any other of the christo-hypocrites so admired in this culture.

Yes, it is important to have guru. Hearing and submitting to authority is the process by which we come to God. God has sent so many guru's throughout history.

Suppose you are born and raised in the desert, and you desire to see snow. You can spend your life wandering around looking for snow, or you can save time and ask someone directly who has seen snow. In this way, you can be certain not to mistake something else for snow, where exactly snow is located, and the path or route best suited for you to take. This is the role of guru.

Guru is the perfect and direct example of the process of God realization, because he has realized God, and in that sense, guru is as good as God. We can learn how to perfectly worship God by perfectly worshipping guru first, and guru can correct any mistakes we make so we do not commit offenses against God. One prime example of perfect guru was Jesus Christ. He said, "I and my Father are one. No one comes to the Father but through me". Since guru speaks only God's words, without his own opinion or speculation, then he is representative of God, and can be seen as no different than God.

To illustrate this point, let us suppose you have an older child and a younger child. You are going out, and you tell the older child, "No watching television. Do your homework". The older child then tells his brother, "No, we cannot watch tv. We must do our homework". Since his words are no different than your words, his words are as good as yours, and should be obeyed exactly as if you were standing there yourself. That is the authority you gave him, but if he misuses it, then he is not a perfect example. If he says, "We can watch tv for a little while, and then we will do homework", then he is cheating. So it is important that Guru is authentic.

When God says, "Do not Kill", and Jesus says, "Do not kill", they carry the same authority. One must seek a guru who does not change the word of God through interpretation or speculation, submit to him, and he will lead you to God.

You can come to know GOD as the greatest teacher. If you ask all the answers are there within you...listen to the small still voice that sounds like TRUTH.
The more you meditate on all things patient kind gentle loving etc the more you will come to hear this voice clearly.

Pray for understanding when things are out of reach

You have the UNIVERSE inside!

I would suggest you listen to Theologist - Allen Watts and his explination on Spiritual Wisdom. He talks about Guru's and Preachers. He explains that it is only important to have a teacher if you feel it is necessary. This is because it is only you, who can help yourself. If you need a guide... then get one if you feel it will help you. But you do not need one.

No.
Your Real Guru is beating your Heart. It is called the Life or Light Principal. Concentrate on that Principal and the Light will expand into your mind which is what enlightement is about. Then you will Standunder (Understand) that you and your 'Source' is one and the same.
