In europe and in Japan...there is no such thing as a tip. Why? because you're paid to DO YOUR JOB. There are plenty of worse jobs that never see tips: garbage men?!? Most pizza places charge you delivery charge as well, that should cover your tip. I hate how in the US...the tip has become a mandatory expected thing..especially at 15%..if you combine tax...your paying 25% more for your meal.
A tip should be what it was...extra money for superior service. If a waiter is always on top of getting your drinks and checking on your food etc etc...maybe they deserve a couple extra bucks...but if he just brings my friend and i are food..and drinks..and lets say he orders a $20 meal and I order a $100 meal..why do I owe him $15 and my friend only $4...for the same service (the server didnt cook my meal).
There is an argument that waiters get most of their wages in tips..only a few places do this, and if they do...if you do not get tipped enough to cover minimum wage, by law the restraunt must pay the server the difference up to min wage. If that happens, then you probably are a pretty bad server and don't deserve anything more than minimum wage. When I was in college..i wasnt near my phone and the guy actuallly hiked up to the third floor to bring my pizza..yes that was added service and he got a nice tip..but if he/she just brings ur pizza..food, drink whatever..I tip 10% to be nice, that and I dont want my food spit in next time i come in for "being cheap"..when you do your job (assuming it's not a server)..do you get 10-15% tips everyday?
p.s. BTW i've received the best service ever from restraunts in Europe and Japan..and people in Japan will actually run out and give you your money back if you try to leave them a tip.

I would have given him $40 and told him keep the change myself. That would have been just for my convenience. No you are not cheap. However some of the people on here who complain about tipping are. Oh and FYI people an average server where I live starts at less that $3 per hour. The average trash person starts at about $15 to $20 per hour.

10 -15% is the norm - you're right on the money - though why NA even has such a habit is beyond me. I don't get tips for doing my job and I get paid the same basic wage - what's wrong with this picture?
