I don't know how advanced you are with regards to a PC.
OK......first off all PC runs slow because of all the crap that are on them first thing is to clean it all up.
open Internet explorer,find tools,Internet options,you need to delete files,cookies, history,delete all.
Find days to keep history,I'm sure you have it on 20 or 21,every time you visit a web page this stays on your hard drive, that's why pages take so long to load,Because its searching your hard drive......put it on zero,Or the lowest you are able, click apply.
OK that's cleaned a little.
Next click start,all programmes,accessories,system tools.disk clean up,do both drives.
Next click start again, all programmes, accessories, system tools, disk defragment, analyze both c and d to see if they both need a degragment.
Here is a free virus scanner link,by far the best i ever seen.
http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html...
A computer needs baby sitting and has to be cleaned up regularly.I do this at least 2 times a week.
one other thing you can do is to click run, in run type in msconfig/SERVICES,START UP
Here is your system configuration, which show you what programmes are starting up,be carefull not to disable what you don't recognize, msn, you will see in there,Example that you can stop this if you wish, look around to see what you want to start up or not...?
TRY IN SAFE MODE.
WHEN U LOG ON YOU MAY NEED TO REFORMAT YOUR HARD DRIVE.
You can do this when it boots up.

try minimizing the number of start up programs. you might ton of program start up when you turn the computer on. you can do this by clicking on start>run and type msconfig. click ok and click on start up. any list there with a checked box is a program that starts when you turn the computer. most of them do not need to start right away so you can uncheck the boxes but you need read through them thoroughly before you decide which should start and which should not. and also it can happen when you too many hardware installed. the power supply might not be able to provide enough power so if you have installed additional hardware like extra cd rom or hard drive then i suggest you disconnect what is not necessary.

How old is your computer? May I suggest it might be time to get a new one?
Logging in can be slowed down drastically by too many desktop icons, and too many start up programs. Try removing some of these. If you have a virus.. do you have anti virus software? go to
http://www.grisoft.com to get AVG, the best free antivirus.

Sounds like you just install Windows XP on your old machine, which is not powerful enough to handle it. It could be HDD being too slow, the RAM not big enough, or the processor not being able to keep up. It could also be that you load too many options of XP onto your machine. If you have XP Pro, try XP Home Edition instead.

Could be a virus. You can scan your computer free at symantec.com(Norton website), but you have to get antivirus and antispyware software to get it out of there.
-Have you done start, programs, accessories, sytem tools, disc cleanup and disc defragmenter? Might be fragmented system.
- You could also use the resore function or "Go Back" to restore your compute to an earlier time when it was working right.
-I had a computer that shut off on me alot and it turned out that the motherboard was dying (so I lost anything that was not backed up on discs) and also there was a trojan horse virus...so the computer was shot (the repairman told me).
-Recommend Norton Internet Security with Antivirus program to protect it.

A friend of mine recently had a similar problem - everything ran extremely slowly. Turned out Windows Update had downloaded Service Pack 2, which was taking up heaps of resources. Tried to remove it but it went so slowly the computer gave up, she had to format the disk in the end.
But try the advice you've been getting here first - check for virii, adware, spyware etc.

You can try to load a virus protection program and get rid of it. But usually once you have a virus on your computer the virus will not let you get it installed. There really is no way around this but to reinstall.

if your computer used to run quickly previously and is getting slower and slower or freezing up then it sounds like a virus. Adware and malware are very likely
Do you use hotmail? ebay? limewire? or have broadband running all day, all these make your computer vilnerable to attack.
Try using www.pcdocpro.com as a free test on your pc.

Sounds viral. But it also can be a bad memory chip, especially if you see that blue screen in XP.
