In young people they are used to show off to each other that they have been intimate and passionate with someone. In elder people (that should know better) they are often used as a sign of possession when the person giving is insecure and wants to warn others off!
They are ugly and immature!

They do it to mark their territory. If some one else fancies their partner and sees a love bite on their neck they would not make a move on em.

lol nice question... its a traditional thing and it shows how much u love that person... i had one awhile back and it was not little at all it was like ( ) that big around and dark. anyways... now that i'm 18 i have not had one in awhile. I got that one when i was 15 years old and my mom freaked just a little when she seen it and that was it... well wish me luck b/c today i find out if i'm pregnant or not yay........its very scary.
