Considering the damage and chaos that nuking causes.. should the USA nuke a country first for whatever reason?

Or should the USA only nuke another country as a retaliation for being nuked?

Lengthy explanations encouraged and welcomed!

Convince me of the foreign policy dealing with such matters that would work best.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion even if it is fundamentally wrong.

Thanks!

You should try to understand that world atmosphere has completely changed. Atom bomb was used against enemy nation to compels them to surrender to safeguard the American citizen. Cold war has ended. At present there is no enemy nation. No sensible Government can even think of enmity with USA.
Nuke has a limited function i.e. to destroy civilian population including women and children having no role in the war. Therefore, the world should be made free from such destructive weapons. Differences with Iran and North Korea are about spreading of nuclear weapons.
A new phenomena is terrorism. We may not like the way Mr. Bush is doing his job, but we should not forget this war is to be won at any cost.

Let's say if the US nukes North Korea, it can lead to a nuclear war because they have China and maybe Russia (not sure) as their closest allies. Or if the US nuke Iran or any Muslim country, you may or may not have the whole Muslim world on you. Just like the others said, it depends if they have allies, when US nuked Japan no one cared about the justification or retaliation of it since Japan didn't had any allies.

We nuked Japan to save lives. After the island hoping campaign in WWII we lost almost 10 - 40,000 per island (usually in 3 months time ((Iraqi 3000 in 5 years? do the math)). The military figured we would loose almost a Million troops by attacking Japan mainland. The new bomb would destroy them yet save us.

Should we be the first to nuke anyone again, only if the other missiles are in the air heading towards us. DR Strangelove

There is no reason, no circumstances, no justification for 'nuking' another country. there are already enough people who are killed as 'collateral damage' it is not necessary to find ways to keep killing each other.

IF, and it's a really big if, the U.S. is attacked, there must be another way to respond without more senseless violence. There are people living all over the world who lose more people each day to violence, disease, natural disasters than the U.S. loses in a year. America beleives it's ok to kill hundreds/thousands of people in response to the killing of one U.S. soldier which seems remarkably arrogant. Apparently U.S. citizens are more important than any other world citizens.

the U.S. is just a big bully.

Nuclear weapons should be used as a last resort only, otherwise it will provoke retaliation with nuclear weapons. And seeing as how many countries have them now, that would not be wise. Plus it would damage us even more in the eyes of the world.

Why imagine that anyone would start nuking against the States ?
Whipping up the frenzy only excites the many excitable people.

the US should be the only country on earth to have nukes, so they can keep the rest of the world in line more easily.

They did. Twice. Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

To this date, the US remains the ONLY country to have used nuclear weapons.

Your question, as worded, is irrelevant.
