I’m a currently college student. My computer has recently died and I am in need of a new one. I basically use the computer for writing papers, going on the internet and storing my music. I’m not sure how much memory I need. I don’t really want to spend extra money for massive amounts of memory if I’m not going to use it but I don’t want to have so little that it becomes a problem. Can anyone enlighten me on how much memory a light computer user like me needs?

512MB RAM and a 60GB HDD should be enough for you.

It all depends if you want to do all these activities at the same time, say write a paper while listening to music and surf the net. It also depends on your operating system. I highly recommend 1Gb of ram. It may be slightly more than you need but you won't ever have any problems with the computer freezing etc. If your an art student doing heavy graphics work or gaming then I would recommend even more upwards of 3 to 4 Gb.

Memory in what sense

1. Hard Disk or any other storage media
2. RAM

in case of 1
you can use as normally one computer is coming with.
e.g. 80 GB to 160 GB normally.

in case of 2
see what softwares you want to install. read their system requirments and let yourself decide how much is required.

normally, 512 MB to 1 GB is used in computers.

1 Gb is a good amount on a laptop. It should be enough to play songs while listening to music and looking up info for papers.

1024 mb of ram

Min. 512 MB.....or you'll be crying later on. But truthfully, I would go with a 1 GB, especially if you're thinking about getting Windows Vista in the future.

The more the merrier....for you.

I would recommend 1GB RAM these days, this will also allow for software upgrades in the future.

The faster your CPU is the less you will need, however get as much as you can afford. 512MB - 1GB would be minimum.
