because all cats have what is called a "tapetum" behind their retinas. It is what allows them to see in the dark (reflects light back out utilising minimal light - hence seeing in the dark) but also causes them problems in bright sunlight (take too much sunlight in). They need to be able to narrow their eyes to slits to prevent too much light getting in and damaging the eyes!

I believe cats see primary colours - red, blue, green etc.

Cats' pupils are oblong in bright light. That's the shape they take on when they are closing (getting smaller). But if you look at a cat in the dark, the pupils open up and become round to let more light in. I don't know if they see colors, but I know that cats are farsighted. They don't see objects that are close to them very well. Cats rule!

Also, cats eyes are shaped as vertical slits because they are predators that rely on agility and jumping, pouncing, etc. A horse's eyes are actually horizontal slits, because it is more important for them to be able to see more of the horizon to keep watch for predators.
