if you make the assumption that the field is a square then it is 1320' x 1320' ( 1/4 mile) and of course 440 yards square
this is the typical layout for land ( where is was government surveyed - a section is 1 mile square and the typical 80 acre farm is 1320' x 2640' ( which is where the term ' the back 40' comes from - 40 acres back 1/2 of the farm )
sorry about the 'slip' at work and didn't get to complete the sentence !
as for the ACRE it is 43,560 sq ft - the easy way to remember the dimension is 660' x 66' which works out well since 660' x 660' is 10 acres and this is the basic unit to work up to a full section 10-20-40-80-160-320-640 acres ( one section ) so 66' is the base measurement unit ! - just stay away from 'rods and chains' now that's confusing !

Acre is a unit of area, not distance, so the answer depends on the shape of the field.
For example: an acre is 4,840 square yards, so a 40 acre field would be 193,600 square yards.
So you could have a 40-acre field that is 1 yard by 193,600 square yards. Walking straight across that would be either 1 yard or 193,600 yards, depending which way you walk.
Or you could have a 40-acre field that is 440 yards square. Then walking straight across either way would be 440 yards (or you could walk the diagonal, which is 622.25 yards...)
Or you could have a different shape...

Jim is right, an acre can be any shape.
Saysme is VERY wrong as a section is 640 acres so 40 acres would NOT be a quarter.

Depends on how the 40 acres are oriented.

Even if the field is square, you can walk 'straight across it' and not be walking parallel with a side. Straight across can be corner to corner or oblique.
