Complicated question. Today's engines are much more fuel efficient and last longer but the added electronics can be a bit of a headache. Older cars had more metal on them and would last a bit longer but made the car heaver and put more stress on the engine. Since we can't go back in time, we are stuck with what we got.

I restore old vintage vw's for a hobby for the past 17 years and with my experience in dealing with the cars of today i think they are more reliable and more technologicaly advnced than the cars of the past. Now cars are aerodynamic and mostly bumbperless and lack alot of charector that the older cars had. Iam a big out of the box thinking kind of guy so with todays horibly high car payments i just retrofit most of my restored vehicles now. The reliability of fuel injection but the brass looks of a well put together car. You can have you cake and eat it too you know.

i own a repair shop, and used to cars was worn out at 75 thousand miles,,now days there barely broken in,,so i think their built better as far as being stronger and more reliable, just think about it,,engines now last 300 k miles,,they used to wouldn't do that,,and the body's on most cars now out last the engines,,they used to rust really bad,so id have to say they have gotten a lot better than they used to be,i still here that old saying to,but i just smile and go on,,a lot of the old timers still think the older ones are better, good luck i hope this help,s,

In the 60s 100,000 miles was considered pretty good. Today, you expect to get 200,000 miles if you take care of your vehicle right.
Moden oil and transmission fluid has as much to do with it as car quality.
