Tough Love. Your rules or out.

Do you live in my house...lol I'm going through this right now and found these Dr. Phil websites. Clear rules MUST be established beforehand. I used the below behavioural contract and sat down with my child and together we decided what the rules and consequences would be so I don't have to constantly nag him and he knows exactly what to expect. Good luck with this...whatever you do, keep the lines of communication open. Peace :-)

Take away access to the car, computer and phone. Take the door off his room. Take his stereo, game boy, whatever away for a period of time. Get a lock on your closet or something so you can hide these things.

He'll throw a fit. Make him earn them back. If he screws up again take them away again.

The important thing is STAY CALM. Kid's ultimate power over adults is the ability to pi$$ them off. If you refuse to get mad and just calmly tell him the punishment he's earned himself, he'll be livid at first - so mad that he can't control you.

He'll fall into line after a week or two if you are CONSISTENT in your enforcement.

If he is 19 or something it's probably time to tell him he's not welcome to stay if he cannot follow the rules. If you have to, set a date for him to ship out. Give him written notice (60 days). Let him know that you will call the Sheriff's department to remove him from the premises on that day.

If you are serious and not all teary-eyed and begging for him to be good, he'll fall into line.

Fucose Man has it! It takes patience and persistence!

But I want to add it also takes doing the quality time things that you used to. Amazingly enough, Monopoly really brought our family together. lol.

Depending on his age, you may have to give him a deadline to shape up or find another place to live.
