The icons are there, but I have no volume control? my computer keeps telling me there are no active mixer devices and that I need to install some? Where did my sound go? It has worked since I got the speakers at xmas.....now it chooses not to work I don't get it??

all these answers sound good, however I know nothing about computers, and soundmax was on the computer when I got it so I have no disk software for it to reinstall.

That's a common problem with Dell Computers. Go to the System Hardware Window.

Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager

Under Sound and Audio Controllers, delete the SoundMax entry, and restart your computer.

The Sound card will automatically be picked up by windows and the drivers will be installed.

And you will be hearing sweet sounds again my friend!

this happened to me once. for some reason it lost the driver. to fix it i right clicked on the my computer icon on the desk top. go to manage click. go to device manager click. go to sound, video and game controllers click. go to sound max right click. go to properties click. on the top of the page, go to driver. go to update driver click. click next, click next again, click on CD ROM drives, be sure to uncheck microsoft updates, insert your software and click next this should find and install your driver.
